THINGS THAT ARE IMPORTANT TO ME

ECOLOGICAL AWARENESS

Once I successfully feel connected I am more likely to treat the world better...

I think by staying with a place your connection and understanding of how it is changing can only grow. I was born on the stolen lands of Quandamooka and this is where my body tries to belong. I can recognise those subtle shifts and I feel less anxious. I think there is an incredible richness to understanding a place through observation and physical exposure. Bruce Pascoe put it perfectly, introducing Louise Crips’s book of poetry Yuiquimbiang, he says: ’This is Country calling for your love. Calls don’t command an answer, but they do require a listener.’ You can read all the books in the world but you may never understand the feeling of the weather and the environment/culture around you. I will move to see something new but I will stay to understand something more deeply.

RESPECT

We should all try to find moments every day to deeply respect and care for others and this land. Particularly the history that shaped this land long before European existence. I acknowledge that sovereignty was never ceded and think hope resides in the ancient land and the people who love and care for it the most.

QUEERNESS

Radical love and acceptance of all living others.

RADICAL DESIGN

During my masters, I realised how much I wanted to do the opposite of what buildings do. For the most part, I feel, architecture has gone way beyond necessary shelter. We go from one air-conditioned container to another (from home, to car, to work) without a physical connection to the outside. I think not only does this disconnect us from changes in climate but feeds into this deep-colonial narrative of the land. At uni I became obsessed with how weather is the ultimate egoless author of architecture and hoped my practice would always try to enhance this connection and not separate us from it. Weather has inspired culture and architecture for centuries and I see it going two ways… we will continue to work against weather or we will once again reaffirm its existence in our lives. I want to be a part of the latter- to build ways to listen to weather every day and understand how it and our bodies effect the land.

BIKE TOURING AND TRAVEL

The slow yet energised pace of the bicycle suits me very well. I have a strong ability to never give up and an obsession with making observations about land and people. Most importantly though it does not burden the precious and fragile state of our planet.

Marilena(she/they) is a queer architecture graduate, graphic designer, art book maker emerging poet and film maker, living and working on unceded Meeanjin land. They are obsessed with documenting the Anthropocene and believes hope resides in land and the people who understand it the most.

Physical exposure and observations of the overlooked are the crux of Marilena’s practice. Their independent publication PLATYPUS and their documentary on Brisbane’s wetlands, MUD, seek to recognise unseen, so called “Australian”, icons hidden at the intersection of land and culture. Her work is a unique blend of humour and environmental awareness and was heralded as being “intelligently and elegantly naïve”.

/[They wish] to rearrange knowledge and power. To never erase nor add/develop. To truly consider something as it is. Just differently.

//[They are interested] in having a physical relationship with all ecological phenomenon, queer ecologies, more-than-humans, bold visual language, experimental language and creating warm connections to complex problems.

///[They enjoy] taking something dry and logical, tearing it apart and turning it into something interesting and approachable.

////[Their perspective] on experiences that people often overlook is something they keep coming back to as a young designer/creative practitioner.

/////[They want] to dwell in the observation of culture and land through a shit tonne of mediums.

////// [They need] income...  but often can't find it.
